Geoff Banks receives substantial damages and apology over Twitter libelPosted on

Our client Geoff Banks, the independent bookmaker, today agreed a settlement with Andrew Smith over defamatory comments posted on the Twitter account @festivalracing.

Mr Smith posted the following unequivocal apology to his followers on Twitter:

Geoff Banks – An Apology

On 10 February 2015 I posted a Tweet about Geoff Banks which I now regret. I posted a series of Tweets in which I alleged, amongst other allegations, that Geoff is a user of class A drugs. Those allegations were without foundation and I am sorry that I made them. I have no evidence to suggest that Geoff has ever taken any drugs nor that my other slurs were justified.

I apologise to Geoff for the distress and hurt caused to him and his family by my Tweets and I am happy to set the record straight.

I have agreed to make a substantial payment of damages and legal costs to Geoff.

The apology appears here.
