A gent goes back to the Old BoysPosted on

Amidst the unedifying content which came out of the John Terry trial it is easy to forget that there remains many gentlemen to be admired in the modern game. Sadly, one such individual departed the English game last week, one Maximiliano Rubén Rodríguez.

Together with Dirk Kuyt Liverpool have lost two really classy individuals, both on and off the pitch. Both have served the club well and decided that the time was right for a new challenge. In Maxi’s case it was a return to his first club Newell’s Old Boys in his native Argentina. His exit was marked by an excellent and sincere use of social media. Using Twitter to thank Liverpool fans accompanied by a heartfelt missive on the LFC website. The manner of Maxi’s departure, including tributes to him on the LFC website and floods of messages on Twitter, was a great example of the positive use to which football can put social media. Proper fan engagement.

Kuyt, a truly class individual, bowed out in similar style with messages for the Anfield faithful:

@Dirk_18_Kuyt It was a privilege to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world!! After 6 years I’m really looking forward to join Fenerbahce.

@Dirk_18_Kuyt I’d like to thank everyone I’ve worked with at LFC and specially my teammates. Also I’d like to thank the supporters for there great support.

And, of course, not forgetting his new club, the equally passionate fans of Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü:

@Dirk_18_Kuyt And to all Fenerbahce supporters. I can’t wait to start!!and really looking forward to win as many trophy,s as we can get!!!

Good luck Dirk and Maxi, you will both be missed.
